A truck fell on a commercial bus at Ojuelegba, inwards Fadeyi, Lagos State, on Sunday, claiming eight lives. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority officials were seen trying to rescue the victims. According to the agency, efforts were being made to rescue the victims. “A container laden truck has fallen on a bus at Ojuelegba, inwards Fadeyi. The effort is currently being made towards rescue and evacuation,” the statement by the Permanent Secretary of the agency, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, read. “Recovery of the fallen container is still ongoing, though it has been taken off on top of the minibus but is yet to be completely removed from the location, traffic is still on hold, and we have a backlog of traffic presently at Alaka. “Kindly exercise patience or find an alternative if you are not trapped in the traffic,” he added. Abuja banks dispense more new notes.

Twenty-four hours after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) ruled out extension of the deadline for deposit of old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes, most banks in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have increased the volume of new notes they dispense. At the Garki 2 branch of First City Monument Bank (FCMB), the Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) were seen dispensing new notes.  A staff of the bank confirmed to The Nation that they dispense more new notes than before. It was the same with Sterling Bank at the Central Business District.  The Nation observed that the ATMs were dispensing new notes and a staff member also confirmed that “the bank is dispensing more new notes”.   On Thursday 8 November, 2018, a town of more than 25,000 people in California was almost completely wiped off the map.   At around 6am, a fire started in a canyon 10 miles outside the town of Paradise. An overhead power line came loose amid high winds, creating sparks that ignited the parched landscape. The flames turned into a wildfire – labelled the Camp Fire - and rapidly started heading towards the town. Tens of thousands of people hurriedly evacuated their homes and businesses, amid flaming trees, falling debris and broken-down vehicles.   By the time the blaze was brought under control, at least 85 people were thought to have lost their lives, making the fire the deadliest in California’s history. Eight Arsenal fans have been arrested in the Ugandan city of Jinja after celebrating the club's win against Manchester United in the English Premier League. The fans were wearing the club's red jersey and carrying a symbolic trophy.  Arsenal fans were travelling in a convoy of five vehicles on Monday morning when they were intercepted by police. One of them was carrying a trophy they had bought at a local store. "I don't know what we have done but we were simply celebrating our victory over rivals Manchester United," Arsenal fan Baker Kasule is quoted as saying by the local Daily Monitor news site. Nigerian singer, Ahmedu Obiabo, popularly known as Blackface, has claimed that a song of his has been stolen by an artiste who spent $165,000 to shoot the musical video for the song. The former member of PlantashunBoiz in a tweet on Tuesday slammed the artiste for not seeking approval before remixing his song. Blackface wrote, “You spend $165k dollars to shoot musical video for your artist Una no fit use 100naira call the owner of the song before una remix am Una dey form say una smart I believe E better make una do the right thing because this one I no go sorry for una ! I dey come !” “They love music I know, but does it give them the right to sample remake or remix works I have already released without proper permission? Family Rejects Old Naira Notes As Bride Price In Niger.

The family of a young woman in Gbako LGA of Niger State has asked the family of her suitor to take back the old N1,000 and N500 notes they gave as bride price. City & Crime gathered that the family of the suitor took an undisclosed amount to the family of the woman as bride price and money for other stuff in preparation for the wedding. Though the wedding was not postponed, guardians of the girl were said to have noted that with the CBN deadline of January 31, they were not ready to buy some things needed for the ceremony and that they did not have a bank account to deposit the money, hence their demand for the new notes. A family member of the male suitor explained that, “We took money to the family of the girl we want to marry. They called me on Sunday to come and take the old currency notes back pending when we have the new naira notes. They said they don’t have anywhere to change the old notes. UNESCO names Senegal as the true home of Jollof Rice over Ghana and Nigeria.

UNESCO has officially recognised Senegal as the origin of Jollof rice, also known as Ceebu jën in Senegal, settling a long-standing debate between West African nations Ghana, Nigeria and Senegal. The dish, which is a staple in West African cuisine, is made of rice and fish, accompanied by vegetables and sometimes tomatoes. According to research by The Conversation Africa, the origins of Jollof rice can be traced back to the entrenchment of colonial rule in West Africa between 1860 and 1940. During this period, French colonizers replaced food crops with broken rice imported from Indochina.  Over time, broken rice became more prized by the Senegalese than whole rice grain and the dish known as Ceebu jën was born.  The dish has become a source of pride and cultural identity for the Senegalese and has been recognised as an intangible heritage of humanity by UNESCO. An international non-governmental organization, CBM Global Disability Inclusion, has urged stakeholders in the mental health sector to provide necessary support towards the passage of the Mental Health Act into law. It said this would help eliminate barriers and discrimination against persons with mental and psychosocial disabilities in the country. Ekaete Umoh, Country Director, CBM Global Disability Inclusion, made the call Friday in Abuja at the graduation ceremony of the first cohort of quality rights E-Training platform organized by the World Health Organization (WHO). ‘How my Facebook friend, kinswoman in prostitution ring trafficked me to Mali’

Abaour, an indigene of Ebonyi State, has narrated how a friend of hers connived with a woman from her hometown to take her abroad for prostitution in the guise of giving her a legitimate paying job. She spoke to our reporter in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State after she was rescued and re-united with her family following more than a month of sojourn in some West African countries. The tortuous journey through difficult terrains and different countries saw her sleep in open motor parks and shanties constructed with polythene bags and wood. A 50-year-old naval rating, Oyewole Femi, who is the head of a car snatching syndicate that operates in Lagos and its environs, has confessed to selling most of the stolen cars to senior naval officers. The suspect, alongside three others, Joshua Adeleke (41), Kabiru Ismaila (38), and Ukpabi Bright Ikechukwu (39), was arrested by the police. Oyewole, who claimed to be serving at the headquarters of the Western Naval Command, said, “I am a serving naval officer attached to the headquarters of the Western Naval Command, Naval Base, Harbour Road, Apapa. I am the leader of a car snatching gang. I have served in the Nigerian Navy for 22 years. I have been arrested for similar offences by the police. Anambra pulls down Peter Obi’s bill boards over alleged debt

  Some of the billboards of Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi in Anambra have been pulled down. The action was carried out over the alleged inability of Obi to pay the State Government. The bill boards mounted in strategic positions in some areas were removed by the Anambra Signage and Advertising Agency (ANSAA) at the weekend. But LP accused Governor Charles Soludo of ordering removal of the bill boards for ulterior motives. . Veteran Nollywood actor, Femi Ogunrombi popularly known as Papa Ajasco, is dead His death was confirmed by a theatre practitioner, Husseini Shaibu, via his Twitter handle on Sunday. He wrote, “I have just been reliably informed that the ethnomusicologist, former Music Instructor with #NATIONALTROUPE and one time stand in for the ‘Papa Ajasco’ character on the popular #waleadenugaprod comic series ‘Papa Ajasco’ Mr. Femi Ogunrombi is dead. “I am told that the actor, singer, highlifist and trained nurse whom we fondly called ‘Uncle Ogurombo’ (not to his hearing though) passed on this evening (Saturday)” Ogunrombi was popular for his role in Wale Adenuga’s Comedy series, Papa Ajasco. Ogunrombi took over the character, Papa Ajasco, when the former character, Abiodun Ayoyinka pulled out of the show.

‘If Kanu dies in DSS custody expect crisis’.

The Spokesperson for the Coalition of United Political Parties, Ugochinyere Imo, has raised the alarm over the deteriorating health condition of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. Imo, who addressed journalists at his country home in Akokwa in the Ideato North Local Government Area of Imo State on Wednesday, said that the country might erupt in crisis if Kanu dies in the custody of Department of Security Service. According to Punch Newspaper, He advised the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to order the DSS to release Kanu to attend to his health issues. Train attack: 20, not 31 people, kidnapped, says Edo govt.

Edo State government, yesterday, said 20 people were kidnapped contrary to earlier reports of 31 people being kidnapped, in the Ekehen, Igueben Local Government area railway station attack, last Saturday. It was also revealed that seven of those kidnapped have been rescued. Briefing newsmen on updates from the Igueben incident, the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, told journalists in Benin City that the latest figure of victims was based on intelligence reports from security operatives from the area. He said: “From intelligence, we have discovered that the kidnappers are successfully holding just 13 hostages, not 31, as previously thought. This is the intelligence available to us now. They might have taken 20, seven were rescued and the balance is 13 people with them.
