Lionel Messi: Argentina, PSG star wins Best Fifa Men’s Player award.

Argentina and Paris St-Germain forward Lionel Messi has been named men’s player of the year at the 2022 Best Fifa Awards. The 35-year-old beat French forwards Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema to the prize. Messi captained Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar, and scored 27 goals in 49 games for club and country in 2021-22. Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas was named women’s player of the year. Messi, who won the award for a second time, said: “It’s amazing. It’s been a tremendous year and it’s an honour for me to be here and win this award. Without my team-mates I wouldn’t be here. “I achieved the dream I had been hoping for for so long. Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore has said former President Olusegun Obasanjo lacks credibility to talk about fraudulent elections. The activist and politician was reacting to Obasanjo’s call to cancel Saturday’s elections in areas where the exercise was disrupted. Obasanjo, in a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had compromised the conduct of the elections. He said the results being declared by INEC do not correspond with the wish of the Nigerian people. Reacting to Obasanjo’s stance, Sowore in a tweet via his verified Tweeter handle accused the former President of laying the ‘foundation for the shambolic election that has become Nigeria’s lot  now.’  Vanguard Newspaper.

Buhari reaped from credible polls, failing to bequeath one – LP PCC

The Presidential Campaign Council of Labour Party, LP, has expressed disappointment over what it described as the failure of President Muhammadu Buhari to bequeath a legacy of credible elections after being a beneficiary of one which brought him into office. Director General of the LP PCC, Akin Osuntokun, said this at a media briefing in Abuja, yesterday. Osuntokun explained that both President Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission failed to live up to their promise to let the votes of Nigerians count despite several assurances. Politicians can’t rig elections without INEC – Ruth Kadiri

Actress Ruth Kadiri-Ezerika has said it’s almost impossible for politicians to rig elections without the help of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). She accused the electoral commission of being excessively fraudulent and corrupt.  In a video, the mother of two demanded INEC released exact results according to polling units. The film star stated that election rigging would not be accepted by the people this year, warning they’ll sue the commission if they did. Obasanjo under fire for seeking cancellation of poll.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has displayed “mischief and hypocrisy” by calling for the cancellation of already conducted elections, the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council (APC PCC) said yesterday. It warned that Obasanjo was recklessly trying to endanger and derail the country’s democratic process out of selfishness, ego and malice. Peoples Democratic Party has charged the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC) to cancel elections in parts of Borno State, where BVAS were not used in last Saturday’s election. The PDP campaign council, in a statement by its spokesman, Daniel Bwala said that the party takes exception to results, which were not announced at the collation centres , will be allowed to be presented at the national collation centre. The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Hale Longpet, sounded the warning while reacting to the crises that erupted in some Local Government Areas while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lokoja. NLC berates INEC over poor conduct of Saturday’s election.

  The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Saturday slammed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for what it considered the anomalies associated with the presidential and national Assembly election. The NLC president, Joe Ajaero vowed that the labour centre will hold INEC directly responsible for all the anomalies associated with the election. “All eligible voters must be given the opportunity to exercise their democratic rights to vote for the candidates of their choice. Anything short of this will be unacceptable to Nigerian workers,” he said. Ajaero said the NLC had hoped that the ills of electioneering in Nigeria would have been largely dealt with and corrected in this year’s election so that Nigerians can have a more credible and valid election. Don’t kill ballot box snatchers, HURIWA warns security agencies

Civil rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association Of Nigeria (HURIWA), yesterday, cautioned the security agencies, especially the Army, Police and Department of State Services (DSS) not to commit extralegal execution of citizens including those of ballot box snatchers. HURIWA said it was concerned about trending videos on the social media in which soldiers were threatening to kill snatchers of ballot boxes during the poll, saying it is unlawful, unconstitutional and a crime against humanity for security forces to disregard their rules of engagements governing all Internal Security Operations and go ahead in trigger happy episodes of extrajudicial killings of Nigerians on the election as a demonstration of the so-called show of strength.
