  A woman, Rukayat Oderinde, has been arraigned by a Magistrate Court in Lagos over alleged Illegal disposal of waste and sentenced to 144 hours of community labour. The convict, Oderinde, was apprehended by the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, enforcement team, for illegally emptying her waste bin into a drainage channel. The convict of number 17, Hassan Ogumola Street, Ahamadiyya, Lagos, was caught red-handed on camera while she was disposing of her household waste directly into the drainage channel, an act strictly prohibited under existing waste management regulations in the state, as they posed serious threats to the overall cleanliness and functionality of the drainage system. The woman was arrested and sentenced to 144 hours of community service by the court, for violating waste management regulations. A widow, identified simply as Mary, and her son, Prince, have been electrocuted by a dangling high-tension cable at Eruemukohwarien community in the Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. The cable was said to have fallen on the rooftop of a market stall on Friday when tragedy struck. The sudden breakage reportedly sparked a fire that engulfed both Mary and Prince, throwing the entire community into grief. Worried residents lamented that the high-tension cable, owned by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, was still left dangling as of Saturday morning. Aggrieved community members, while expressing concerns over the outdated nature of the BEDC cables in the area, emphasised the urgent need for an overhaul of the wires rather than repairs. Against the background that the suspended Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele had been detained, the Department of State Services said on Saturday the top banker was not in its custody. The Spokesman for the DSS Dr.Peter Afunanya, made the clarification in a mail to Vanguard. Afunanya while responding to claims that the CBN Governor had been arrested by the secret police said: “Currently, Emefiele is not with the DSS”. It will be recalled that the purported arrest of Emefiele shortly after being suspended from office by the President had been widely reported by some online media.   A bereaved father, Samuel Adun, has offered to pay N100,000 to anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of his son-in-law, identified simply as Inuaghata. Inuaghata was alleged to have killed his pregnant wife, Osaretin. Adun told journalists in Benin on Friday that his daughter had three children for the suspect. He noted that he was called that his daughter was killed by her husband, adding that Inuaghata had gone into hiding since May 24 when the incident happened. He said, “I hail from Orhionmwon Local Government Area. My daughter was killed by her husband. She was 23 years old. The Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang,  on Thursday, reversed some appointments made by his predecessor, Simon Lalong. Among the reversed appointments were those of Permanent Secretaries and civil servants recruited by the immediate-past governor. Mutfwang’s decision was announced in a  statement on Thursday by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere. He alleged that the appointments by Lalong were characterised by “apparent flagrant abuse of Public Service Rules, non-adherence to due process, indiscriminate and irregular employment in the state and local governments by the immediate-past administration.” The statement quoted the governor as directing that: “All appointments into the state civil service made from October 1, 2022 to date are hereby suspended with effect from same date, subject to review in line with due process. “All those who have retired but are yet to vacate their offices or duty posts, either because of extension or contract appointment...

The Nigeria Labour Congress, on Tuesday, explained that  it suspended its nationwide strike planned for Tuesday to protest fuel subsidy removal, because the government demonstrated willingness to hold dialogue and provide “reasonable palliatives to cushion the effect of its policies.” The NLC gave the explanation in a communique issued at the end of its emergency National Executive Council on Tuesday. “Considering the mood of the socio-polity, last elections and the need to pursue national stability and consequently, the NEC-in-session resolved as follows: “To commend and applaud the diligence of the congress’ leadership in carrying out the assignment given to it by NEC;  to demonstrate to the Federal Government the need to comply with the laws of the land, especially as it concerns obedience to the rulings of the courts and their brazen disregard for the 2023 Appropriation Act. ”
