The Bond between President Tinubu and VP Shettima

Image
By Tunde Rahman. Long before President Bola Tinubu decided on Vice President Kashim Shettima, who turned 59 last week, as his running mate in the last presidential election, both of them had first collaborated across boundaries and different political parties several years ago to the present, when they are working together at the helm of Nigerian affairs. President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima continue to march on in harmony and deep partnership. Their relationship is borne of mutual respect and trust and fired by patriotic zeal and the need to promote democracy, good governance, and economic development. That bond has continued to wax stronger. I do not feign any knowledge regarding the exact time the two leaders encountered each other. It’s on record, however, that both worked together, alongside other like minds, to merge the legacy parties that eventually formed the APC in 2014. Indeed, the torchbearers of the merger were President Tinubu – leading the defunct Action Congress...

Dele Alake Sets the Record Straight on June 12: Tinubu’s Heroic Role Reaffirmed

Image
In a compelling recent interview, Dele Alake..veteran journalist and Minister of Solid Minerals Development, defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's legacy in the historic June 12, 1993 elections. Responding to claims by former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, who alleged that Tinubu supported the annulment of the election, Alake dismissed the statement as “historically dishonest” and “blatant falsehood.” Alake, a first-hand participant in the events that shaped Nigeria’s democratic struggle, recalled how Tinubu was among the earliest and most active defenders of MKO Abiola’s presidential mandate. From his central role in the Social Democratic Party (SDP) primaries, where he was instrumental in persuading Atiku Abubakar to step down for Abiola,to leading protest planning, fundraising, and logistical coordination, Tinubu's contributions were pivotal. He emphasized that Tinubu was on the ground immediately after the election annulment, organizing civil resistance and protest act...

How Obaseki’s children celebrated the printers’ devils

Image
Yesterday, badly behaved children set the social media agog over a trivial and baseless issue of a clear case of printer’s devil, where a banner originally meant to read “workshop” was mistakenly printed as “worshop”. This minor error, which would ordinarily be overlooked by any reasonable person, was suddenly elevated to political discourse by loyalists of our modern-day Sanballats, Tobiahs, and Geshems in Edo political space.  For the record, the stakeholders’ sensitization workshop was aimed at exposing the commendable programs and projects of governor  Monday Okpebholo and this was held in May. Again, and for the records, the event was not only well-attended, but also very impactful and widely praised by academic eggheads who attended the successful workshop.  However, mischief makers and enemies of progress blurred the date on the banner they exhumed from the archives for want of nothing against the governor and circulated the outdated image by latching on the typogr...

The Curse of Power: Africa's Sit-Tight Leaders and the Burden of Governance

Image
Power is a tool for development, meant to uplift society and drive progress. However, in Africa, some leaders crave power without assuming the responsibilities that come with it. Unfortunately, this trend manifests strongly in Nigeria, where politicians have remained in power for decades without any significant impact on the people. Some leaders, particularly from Cross River State, have held office for 16 years or more yet continue to scheme and manipulate their way into retaining power despite offering nothing new or transformative.   These leaders mirror the political strongmen and dictators that have long plagued the continent. Among them is President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, who has now joined the infamous club of African sit-tight leaders.   It is both disheartening and shocking that President Paul Kagame has been nominated by his political party to contest Rwanda’s forthcoming presidential elections for another seven years—after already serving as Preside...

Governor Okpebholo made this known on Tuesday while meeting with the leaders of Obagie, Oke-Oroma, and Amagba communities over land and insecurity concerns in Benin city. While reinstating his administration’s resolve to develop the proposed new city around the communities, the Governor said a technical committee will soon be announced to handle the restitution of cult members and criminally-minded youths in a bid to reduce the menace of violent crime including kidnapping. On the left: 83-year-old Prince Tajudeen Olusi, Chairman of the Governor's Advisory Council, Lagos State.

Image
On the right: 57-year-old Abiodun Oyebanji, Governor of Ekiti State. Prince Olusi visited the Governor in his office at Ado-Ekiti. But what happened next? A powerful moment. The younger Governor, despite his high office, knelt to greet the elder. And the elder, despite his age, bent slightly in respect for the Governor’s position. This is not politics. This is Yoruba culture—where age and position are both honored. Respect flows both ways. This is what true humility and tradition look like. We can all learn from this.
